MayWe Sushi in Frankfurt

by John on July 18, 2010

I’ve been a sushi fanatic for almost 2 decades.  For one of those decades I have lived in Frankfurt.  Unfortunately, Germany doesn’t seem to have it’s share of good sushi restaurants.  Maybe it’s the “Meat” culture of Germany or maybe it’s the lack of Pacific sushi-quality fish.  Either way finding a good Japanese restaurant in [...]

Raspberry Season!

by John on May 22, 2010

Every time I walk through downtown in Frankfurt I pass at least two fruit stands hawking the “in season” fruits and vegetables.  This time of year Raspberries and Asparagus are on offer.  From hundreds of meters away one can hear their cries trying to lure passersby long enough to take a look at their produce. [...]

Don’t Toss Bad Gorgonzola

by John on April 27, 2010

My wife, daughter and I ate at an Italian bistro called L’Olivastro last weekend.  In the bistro they had a wine store and delicatessen with all sorts of meats, cheeses and antipasti.  We took the chance to stock up on bresaola (air cured beef tenderloin), San Daniele parma ham, gorgonzola dolce and pecorino. Much to the [...]

Relish and Bread

by John on April 26, 2010

Every successful restaurant has a giveaway, usually something to wet the appetite.  In a restaurant called Vivace in Omaha, Nebraska it was freshly baked bread and a fantastic Tomato Relish.  The relish is a mixture of tomatoes, roasted peppers and basil and it was served with freshly baked foccacia or ciabatta.

Stockholm Nights

by John on April 17, 2010

Stockholm is one of the nicest cities on the planet.  I’ve been there quite a few times and I’m always amazed at how much good food is to be had.  Considering the short growing season, it must be quite the challenge to stay true to the taste of a dish when so many ingredients must [...]

I love steak. ’nuff said…. Seriously, I think a good, well made, medium rare steak is hard to beat.  Of course, one has to start with meat from a good cut of beef and hopefully, well aged.

The apartment building we live in has a grocery store in the ground floor.  Next to the awesome view of downtown Frankfurt and the maple flooring it’s the best part of this apartment.  In the market they had ricotta cheese on sale naturally I took advantage of the offer and made ricotta cheesecake.

Pasta Puttanesca

Pasta Puttanesca is a fantastic combination of strongly flavored fish, fresh herbs and cured condiments.  I make it quite regularly at home because most of the ingredients have a long shelf life and therefore always available in my pantry.  This is my “fall back” recipe;  If what I’m making doesn’t turn out or if guests [...]

Elsass, not Alsace

Thumbnail image for Elsass, not Alsace

Because of this post’s title I’m sure there’s a few angry French people out there.  I prefer to use the German spelling of this region in France because of the food.  If you equate sauerkraut, roasting and sausage with German cuisine then Elsass (Alsace) is more German than French.  I envy the people who live [...]

Mackerel, the “unsung” Fish

Thumbnail image for Mackerel, the “unsung” Fish

My family loves to eat fish but fresh fish in Germany is not cheap and the recent economic “downturn” has forced us to tighten our belts, just like everyone else.  I have always seen Mackerel in the fish markets being bought by the older generation.  Being common in the oceans around Europe, mackerel doesn’t have [...]
